Turkmenistan Government
Dr. Gurbanguly M. Berdimuhamedov, President of Turkmenistan, was born in 1957 in Babarap village of Geok-tepe district in Akhal province of Turkmenistan.
In 1979 he graduated from the Turkmen State Medical Institute in Ashgabat.
During 1979 - 1997 Dr. Berdimuhamedov was holding different positions in the Ministry of Healthcare and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, including positions of the Director of the Dental Center, the Associate Professor of preventive dentistry, and the Dean of Dentistry department of Turkmen State Medical Institute. Simultaneously he has obtained a Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science degrees in medical sciences.
In December 1997 he was appointed as the Minister of Healthcare and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, Executive Director of Healthcare Development Foundation of Turkmenistan, and Acting Rector of Turkmen State Medical Institute.
In April 2001 he was appointed as Deputy Chairman of Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.
On December 21, 2006 Dr. Berdimuhamedov was appointed as Acting President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Turkmenistan by the decision of the State Security Council of Turkmenistan.
On February 14, 2007 during XIX session of Halk Maslahaty (Peoples Council), supreme authority of the country at that time, Dr. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov officially assumed the post of the President of Turkmenistan.
President Berdimuhamedov continues to do specific research in medicine. The scope of his scientific interests also includes economics, ecology, and history.
In his free time he enjoys sport shooting, horse riding and racing, and martial arts.
